Why not they go even further? Anybody using paintbrushes, pencils, a canvas and pre-prepared paint is not doing proper art because many thousands of years ago, they had to rely on different fluids(food, mud, etc), rocks, etc to make paintings. The biggest difference between digital paintings and generative ai are the components, choices and the agency of the painter. In digital art, you still have different components that YOU have to find a way to make something out of, YOU still can choose to just use a digital pencil and draw from hand and hence YOU have more say on the end result. In generative AI, the main "creativeness" comes from the AI stealing from ready data in the internet, NOT the person using their own experiences or ideas or their own unique way of drawing. It's a machine just photocopying whatever came before it and melding them together to suit a specific demand. All the "artist" had to do was write what kind of art he wanted and the biggest limitation AI has is that it can't go beyond the internet(and in case of most AI, what is popular and high in quantity), something humans can. Call me when a robot can actually make something without having to rely on any iota of data from the internet, because that is the fantasy through which AI artists are deluding themselves. I don't want the fantasy, I want an actual piece of junk with a mind and worldview of it's own that can make something on it's own. It's only in case of art made by that kind of AI through which true AI art can exist. What we have now is mere pattern recognition. As for digital vs paper, the difference is only on resources and medium, not who is making the art which is what radically differentiates pattern recognition "art" from human art.
