Democracy is not majority rules, it's the protection of the minority from the majority. When an individual cannot speak an opinion that's is different from the opinion of the majority, when a law is not applied equally regardless of how many people share your viewpoint, if a majority can decide what is and what is not without consideration to the status of the minority then you are not living in a democratic society. Democracy doesn't mean we weigh the needs of the many to the needs of the few; we have to protect the needs of the minority as long as those needs doesn't cause harm to all of the members of that society.
