I think one of the problems is that people think automation = utopia, but that's not really true. In 1984 they also automated art for the proles, and it was a dystopia. The underlying assumption of automation = utopia is that we'd be automating the 'bottom' of the pyramid of needs, things like housing and food. If we automated, I don't know, having friends, that wouldn't really be all that utopian and could easily be dystopian instead. Also see Brave New World.
