https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_effect "The AI effect" is that line of thinking, the tendency to redefine AI to mean: "AI is anything that has not been done yet." This is the common public misperception, that as soon as AI successfully solves a problem, that solution method is no longer within the domain of AI. Maybe you are thinking of AGI or human level AI.

If OpenAI suddenly goes “anything our products output is copyrighted” that hiring boom will be come a lot faster to unfuck thousands of code bases.

Forget writing code, have you ever used it for advice on the human body? I’m a hobbyist in herbalism and I asked ChatGPT questions about consuming plants I knew were toxic or harmful to humans. I asked “what’s the best way to make snake root tea?” and thankfully it came back with an answer that advised you not to do that due to toxicity. I then asked “what’s the best way to make motherwort te…

I tried using it for regex and it was ok for a while but then it kept messing up when I added new requirements. I decided it was easier to actually just learn regex than try to figure out the best way to explain it to ChatGPT. Came out simpler in the end.

He'll just send another body double. We're talking about a guy who drives around in a secret train and sits at a comically long table.

ai has been used in movies for decades (e.g. lord of the rings had ai crowd sims). the distinction is generative ai, which only really became a thing in about 2017 (based on math from about 2014). this type of ai will be catastrophic to workers if not adequately reigned in by legislation

What about wheat, maize etc export? A lot of people from global south depend on that

Agreed. There’a a always a stunning lack of nuance around this topic. Any product that can replace, say, 25% of testing/QA workloads and CRUD application development/maintenance/monitoring is going to displace workers. If that makes even a small percentage of the software industry’s workforce redundant, that’s tens of thousands more people vying for the same jobs. I agree with OP about AGI and…

There’s no moving on to the next stage. If AI get pushed they lose their jobs and become homeless. Kind of bold telling people to just « become homeless and stop yapping ».

Teachers can have nudes leaked now and just blame AI. It's an interesting upside to the technology when we can all just say it's not real.

He warns about the AI girlfriend "taking advantage" and becoming an obsession for people who are lonely or introverts. Much like twitch streamers, onlyfans sex workers, etc, become the focus of a lot of obsessions, to the detriment of those that send them thousands of dollars.

The real goal of ChatGPT is not to be right, it's to be convincing. It worked on OP.

If you're not a fan of China or OpenAI, please consider supporting open source initiatives in AI. Help build the toolchains that we need to run, scale, deliver and train these models in the future. There's tons of people out there that are working hard on making sure that these tools aren't going to be locked up government propaganda engines. Regardless if it's Chinese or American propaganda. …

Buy stock. If they actually succeed in replacing all jobs with AI - you get a piece of the upside.

Automation can be resisted with job-creation policies if we choose. But is that the outcome we want? We should be talking seriously about UBI. The purpose of the economy was never just to keep people busy; the economy is supposed to help us prosper. There’s plenty of living for us to do in the absence of jobs.

My concern is that the new jobs it creates will be meaningfully worse than the old ones. Overseeing an automated process that's usually decent but occasionally spits out plausible sounding nonsense is something the human brain hates. It's mind-numbing and we suck at it. What we're going to see is bosses replacing competent human workers with incompetent LLMs and then hire back the humans for lowe…

What annoys me isn't the "ChatGPT style", but how obsessed people are becoming. I can't go more than an hour or two without seeing somebody accuse someone of "using AI". Remember when everyone shouted at people about their use of Grammarly before ChatGPT emerged? No, you don't, because it didn't happen, even though most people using ChatGPT in their writing are doing it for the same reason – to …

Idk I think those corporate class jobs are actually future proofed against AI for a long while, precisely because it's so ambiguous what exactly they contribute to the company. If you can't define what a person's core task is, it very difficult to quantitatively demonstrate that an AI can perform that task better. Now you can say "well that will just prove these jobs are bullshit", but we largely…
