Agreed. There’a a always a stunning lack of nuance around this topic. Any product that can replace, say, 25% of testing/QA workloads and CRUD application development/maintenance/monitoring is going to displace workers. If that makes even a small percentage of the software industry’s workforce redundant, that’s tens of thousands more people vying for the same jobs. I agree with OP about AGI and the fact that if and when AI can replace someone who takes in novel input and solves problems, it’s replacing a whole host of white collar workers. The trades would become the hardest people to replace. Even if AI can respond to complex queries, it’s going to take a long time before that intelligence gets deployed into a robotic body capable of unclogging a drain pipe. What kills me though is any post that confidently and loudly proclaims what AI will or won’t do. What I know for sure is that AGI cannot be dismissed as “just another tool” because the calculator didn’t wipe out accountants. No tool in history has ever replaced the need for human reasoning and solutions to novel problems. Anyone who confidently says they know how that will impact us one way or another is not to be taken seriously.
