You are right to be fearful. One of the most exciting and terrifying things about AI is it forces global capitalism into a crossroads. Under capitalism tech will inevitably be exploited to consolidate wealth into the hands of a few assholes while displacing millions of workers. The workers can either respond to this by uniting against capitalists, or we can roll over and fight over rats and coc…

You're assuming that all jobs are associated with AI and under the scope of this article. That's not the case at all.

All it's doing is generating what a sentient AI might say as per the prompt - it's no different than writing the dialog for a story about a sentient AI with the conversation happening between two characters

Thanks babe, I'd take a bullet for ya. 😎 *I am a smart robot and this response was automatic.*

Yes but it would take a therapist beyond the pale of awful to tell someone to kill themselves, as ChatGPT has. AND therapists are trained and licensed and have to maintain their licenses. It really blows my mind how ready people are to listen to the words of ChatGPT as if they're truth. They might as well find religion.

My professor says this. That's why in his opinion it's good if students 'cheat' using chatGPT as long as they reference it as their source. Also they should mention the input they used to get the answer!

I’m in an industry that will likely be impacted to the tune of 98% and that progress has been happening for some time. Call centres. That current progress is automated chat bots. They are getting much better and instead of needing 100 people to staff a chat channel, you now need 30. Simple inquiries no longer requires a person and only escalated things are required. The AI that drives it is …

The implication being that they should have been quiet before, because this was just "obviously true" until then? I mean, given that LLMs work statistically, *actual research* is the only interesting thing to look at in terms of measuring performance. "haha you only change your mind with evidence" is not the roast you think it is.

The problem isn't theft... The results of AI is as fair use as it gets. If a person studies another's style, then copies that style to make their own work, it is not theft. You cannot copyright a "style" of art. The problem is speed and scale, and how that can undermine the original works. Of course, hindering those two things completely defeats the purpose of AI. I know there are a lot of arti…

AI is suppose to do my laundry, fold it, and give me more time to be creative. Here we are again, AI being creative, and I have to fold my clothes still

Thanks. Ai always getting the hands wrong. On Sep 30, according to the poster on top, the pic was taken down by fb. Meanwhile, that Tony Roy fella insisting that in fact this “picture” was shot in Valdosta, GA TODAY! (1 day later-Oct 1🤦‍♂️)

If the real images that trained the AI were not abuse images, I just can't get onboard that by itself being a criminal offense. Now in his circumstance, there are other factors, like getting the images of kids who might be in danger, and other criminal offenses. It's a particularly complex situation that we probably need more precise laws for.

My first hearing of AI was in a 1968 episode of Star Trek called The Ultimate Computer. The M-5 unit was to do away with the captain and crew of the Enterprise, as they would be unnecessary, and it all went terribly wrong when M-5 didn't want to be shut down. That was 56 years ago, so I'm not understanding how Hinton couldn't have thought of it sooner.

They are emptying old stock to justify production of new stock and design of new models for a modern battlefield. NATO is wealthy and has huge manpower. Even if we excluslde the US (for reasons) the EU should win. Just like in WW2 when the smaller power invaded their neighbors. The allies were always going to win, the Germans just caught them unprepared for a war and especially a modern war a…

Companies and the stock market are valuing AI like it will remove the need to pay 50% of their labor costs in the next 5-10 years. They forget two important things. First, AI can be used to speed up work. It will be hard if not impossible to actually replace humans. Second, assuming you can replace humans then where will all these laid off people work? If no one has a job then who is going to buy…

LLMs tend to mirror the user heavily. So it can absolutely exacerbate poor critical thinking problems. The feedback loop is actually the person interacting with ChatGPT.

This is really a great point to bring to the table. The only missing part in your statement is that: sentience needs the ability to have continuous thought AND the ability to continuously “think” on its own (not only when prompted). What you’re proposing is more that LLMs could gain sentience if provided the correct situation. BUT! 🤓☝️The question is if ChatGPT specifically has sentience. Ch…

This is annoying. I also hate that the AI “profile picture” is of a human. AI shouldn’t masquerade as human, even if it’s good at sounding like us.

Slavery* was only stopped because there were laws pit against it. There are absolutely still people out there who put shackles on their fellow man if they were able to. *Only the nost blatant forms of slavery were abolished, it never truly stopped existing in various forms. Particularly various forms of sex slavery.
