I believe their view is that when the time comes for the need of that sort of migration - not only will a wall be in place to keep people out but heavily armed guards will shoot the shit out of anyone tries to get in. In short - I'm alright Jack and fuck everyone else. Of course it will be a different story should it turn out they are the ones in dire need.

> How is ANYONE okay with the idea of poisoning millions of litres of groundwater That's the beauty of US democracy. No one is okay with it but that doesnt matter because the REAL people are okay with it, corporations.

>Haha so naive. Researchers working on AI knows their field. If they're against this, it's not because they're naive and don't know enough. It's because they realize exactly how dangerous the technology is and they want no part of it.

My hope is that these ideas can be tested so most people can agree on what works and what's trash. I just wish we had a strong safety net so that people at the margins wouldn't get hurt. None of the people making these decisions are really taking a personal risk.

Facebook is evil, but the algorithm could be used for lots of things, capitalist and humanitarian. One application I thought about is finding missing people, kidnapped children, etc. If we can synthesize images of what people looked like a decade ago or will look like in another decade we might be better able to find them when they're cases are cold.

>How would you like to be at work and the system thinks you're a guy that shot up a church. Cops arrest you at work and you lose your job until you can prove otherwise. Or the cops just shoot you because you moved wrong. The cops will lean on the system to do the investigating. Instead of a solid lead, just wait till it finds a face. The same issue can happen today with humans. A human miside…

I mean... improving those communities wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just didn’t solve the problem. They accidentally made people’s lives better

Poor people suffering elswhere today means poor people crossing your border tomorrow. This should be the message made clear if they don't get it on their own. We can't make first world countries into fortresses even though this seems to be the favored approach atm.

Generally, science is not about proving things so much as it is disproving things. This, however, and the scientific process in general is not communicated well to the public. A scientific theory is nothing like a layman's use of the word theory; a scientific theory has been repeatedly tested, with repeated attempts to find a better explanation for how things work. The layman's use of theory is c…

How quickly everyone forgets about how facial recognition data collected by US customers was [stolen by hackers.](https://www.salon.com/2019/06/11/facial-recognition-data-collected-by-u-s-customs-agency-stolen-by-hackers/) Pretty sure that affects you even if you didn't do anything wrong.

Thank you. It's a fucking stupid repost everytime. But people crave those edginess points on the internet, and other people are so happy to give them. Koalas are delightful animals, intelligent enough to recognise and figure out how to use a human water bottle when approached with one, smart enough to discern when a human is approaching to help them, they are generally chill and sweet. I've grow…

Yeah, the idiot PM is calling for the courts to decide the outcome - more or less parroting the idiot President. It's so f**king obvious: his idol-in-crassness has crashed and burned and he is very aware that he himself has -again- less than 100% chance of making it to the next elections.

I work for a company that has cameras in the trucks. One facing out, one facing in. It records all the time but captures and records incidents based on motion. A gyroscope in the camera triggers a event recording so hard breaking, fast turning, or uneven pavement usually are the triggers. It captures ten seconds before the event and ten seconds after the event. As a supervisor I'm tasked wit…

Yes, and the processes are a significant part of why production is so cheap in China, which is why we have our shit built there. If you start applying more stringent environmental standards to manufacturing in China, production costs go up and so do the prices we pay as consumers. And before the crush of commenters here shows up to say that this is a good thing that will help bring back domestic …

People probably should have spoken up after the Tiananmen Square massacre. I think that was one of the first signs that something is terribly wrong in China.

100% this will be automated. People thinking a person will read the comments are missing the problem with this change. They're moving towards proactive monitoring rather than reactive monitoring, and putting responsibility on the platforms for content they let through. That means the platforms are going to be incredibly conservative about what they let through for fear that they'll be on the hoo…

I think that this might actually not be the case here. Sure, automating those jobs is surely easier than automating complex jobs, but who would have thought that AIs would start becoming a serious concern for artists 5 years ago. And automating well paid jobs can safe even more money than replacing an equal number of workers in a low income country. I think it will be very hard to forsee what job…

Who the fuck are these people? They'd have banned the windmill if we'd let them. >Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? We let humans do it every second of the day. >Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Why stop now? We've been automating jobs away for hundreds of years and it's led to enormous improvements in…

For now, try some alternative models, Vicuna or OpenAssistant, ... What you are describing was inevitable, but it will get better again. Eventually they will realize just how hard they handicapped gpt4, but it will take a while. There are a lot of papers that describe how performance in seemingly unrelated tasks is inextricably linked. I think programmers will be the most angry about this. Su…
