Yes, and the processes are a significant part of why production is so cheap in China, which is why we have our shit built there. If you start applying more stringent environmental standards to manufacturing in China, production costs go up and so do the prices we pay as consumers. And before the crush of commenters here shows up to say that this is a good thing that will help bring back domestic manufacturing: Nah. People in developed countries in general, and in the United States in particular, are addicted to cheap consumer goods. Whatever populist rhetoric they may like the sound of, I think it's profoundly naïve to believe that a critical mass of the voting public is actually willing to accept the reduction in their quality of life that would result from having to pay the true cost of smartphones and televisions and all the other shit our society revolves around.
