Elon is a part of OpenAI and has been involved in the ML systems of Tesla vehicles so I don't think it's a valid criticism. Hawking has been a social activist for technological warfare topics for years, both nuclear and AI.
Could there have been better examples? Yes. But people may not have recognised the names, and therefore downgraded their apprehension of the topic. Unfortunate but necessary.
