V2V (vehicle to vehicle) transponders.
Basically, every vehicle on the road either is exchanging data with all other vehicles near it (last known GPS position, how fast they are going, are they accelerating or braking, what steering angle, what gear, etc) or in the case of 'dumb' vehicles like old cars and, oh, motorcycles, they simply advertise their presence without listening to the other transponders.
This way, the robot brains of the autonomous vehicles have more data to work with. There won't be any confusion over "is that a motorcycle 100 feet away or a car 1000 feet away?" because the bike's transponder will be advertising itself with location, heading, speed, and if it's speeding up or slowing down. Yes, I know, it'd be a nightmare for the libertarian types who don't Big Brother to spy on their driving, BUT... we already have traffic standards such as turn signals, brake lights, and so forth, that ship has sailed. If the drivers can't communicate what they're doing, then make it so the vehicles do so instead. Note that this does not predicate active control of other vehicles, either, just a tool for autonomous vehicles to safely react to everything around them on the road.
