all chatbots hallucinate but I've never seen it get defensive, they are literally trained to validate whatever you say because that gets more user engagement.
and another thing, the AI will not actually know about "the guy" it suggested bromide to because it's not in the training data nor memory if it was quickly patched due to backlash. that part just seems like him misunderstanding what the chatbot can do, it was actually not trying to deceive that's why it eventually gave in and told him what he wanted to hear
