Great talk. I'm an English teacher overseas and I've been frustrated by how materials I've come to enjoy are suddenly discontinued by the capitalist money machine, and how even the best of what I've found commercially available is both pedagogically inferior and ultimately peddling a socially conservative worldview, such as how the bad guy "robbers" are always caught by the good guy "cops" in their embarassingly oversimplified and fundamentally off-base narratives. In an effort to use materials that are socially progressive, more logically systematized, and more empowering for my students, I've begun outlining some textbooks. The costs of hiring a professional artist and graphic designer to do all the work are prohibitively high, so I've been considering an Artistly subscription to better serve my students. In that way, it's not true that any garbage art I can scribble down will necessarily be better than what generative AI can produce, if the latter's productions better connect with students' hearts and minds. It is a pact with the devil I'm considering... but considering the alternatives - the socially fetid affairs that are standard EFL textbooks - I think it's for the greater good that I seal the deal, right?
