Yes, autonomous cars have the potential in the medium and long term to improve safety on the road. The way they are being developed in the short term demonstrates a dangerous arrogance, though, and I predicted to people in the field that there would be deaths like this.
As far as I can tell, the car did absolutely nothing to help the situation. The pedestrian was clearly moving in a particular direction, so the car could have at least started slowing down, and moved slightly in the direction away from the pedestrian's apparent path. Also, although I can not be sure of this, it doesn't appear that the horn was sounded.
I agree that a driver in a regular car would not have been able to avoid an accident under these circumstances, but there would have been some attempts to at least lessen the damage by sounding the horn, braking, and moving the steering wheel. The video indicates that the car underperformed compared to what an alert driver would have done.
I consider the performance of the engineering team behind this autonomous car, based on this video evidence, to be inadequate, and I doubt I would hire them in any capacity.
