​@garrettzanin940Yes the comparison is purposeful, they both filled a similar niche that didn’t meaningfully exist before: the real-time creation of novel, context-aware content at scale, across media, for non-expert users. I know this argument has been used by lazy artists, but bear with me. In the case of photography, it was and it's still not seen as art among some circles. It skipped the set of skills and resources that painting required. With AI the same is happening. The same way photography didn't killed portraits, AI will not kill artists. But it opens up a whole set of tools that can be used to allow creative minds to develop further curiosity and it enables rapid prototyping, brainstorming, or “thinking out loud” of content that no other tool allows. Just like anyone has a camera and most people take countless pictures that don't have artistic value. AI slop is abundant in the internet with useless, repetitive and brain dead content. But in the right hands I've seen insane creations and expressions that I just can't close my eyes and deny have any aesthetic worth. The best control of one's artistic expression comes from doing it oneself, just like you said. Sadly a lot of artists commission because they aren't interested in that set of skills. With AI someone can actually have more control than handing it over to others. Which I admit, diminishes the collaborative effort, but it also opens up the space for solo artists to expand their vision. I absolutely agree with your last point. We shouldn't separate ethics with anything. But the reality is art often threads in the controversial line of creative expression vs ethics. This is not to justify it, but it'd be hypocritical for me to say that art (and most capitalized media in general) really care about the ethics of how they acquire their resources and produce content. Regardless, if that issue were to be solved, I see no objection in using AI art. And frankly I find the opposition against it anti-technological and I guarantee in a couple decades will be seen as retrograde, just like we see the people that opposed photography.
