AI is not coming for everyone's jobs anytime soon. I just graduated with a computer science degree. I have formal education on how AI works. I made my own AI for my senior project. I've been learning more since I graduated. I bought the AI hype back when I didn't know much. But now, with the more I learn, the less impressed I am with AI. There are some very serious, deep technical problems with AI that is preventing us from actually making AGI, and no one has a single clue about how to solve them. We literally got lucky with our current AI because it turned out that simply pumping tons of data into them caused them to be useful. They are very good at sounding smart, but that's it. It doesn't take much to break them, fool them, or stump them. All of these tech companies are just hyping up AI because it's financially beneficial for them to do so. Businesses will try replacing workers with AI, but they are in for a rude awakening when they find out AI is not nearly as capable as they were told. What I think is going to happen is businesses will fire lots of workers, the AI won't be able to do the jobs well, massive enshitification will ensue along with economic hardship, they will realize they do actually need workers, and essential services will hire back people. I think some jobs like call center workers won't be hired back because businesses will simply not care about having bad customer service, so they'll be fine with subpar AI performance that's cheap instead of paying workers. But businesses with jobs that are important at all will be forced to hire people back. The businesses that do the best in the future will be the ones that combine humans and AI. The future will be humans monitoring AI do simple parts of the job, reviewing and correcting its work, and finishing the last 20% that AI can't do.
