I agree, the reason AI is bad is because it doesn't understand. Good art is deliberate and consistent with what is it trying to convey but AI will learn from 1000 different pieces from the same art style, amalgamate their meaning and then put all of that in to one piece. And the result can often give an initial sense of awe or excitement but there is never anything beyond that, which is where this idea of AI creating "soulless" art comes from, I think. It's like the equivalent of eating candy; fun, zero nourishment. We want our art to be the 8 hour, slow cooked brisket with all the trimmings, not a pile of candy canes on a plate. I will also say though, to most people that might not matter. I think a lot of people don't engage with art on that level, they just think "wow that's a cool picture" their definition of art might eve be "cool picture."
