The most damning thing I've seen recently is when AI prompters become enraged when someone else "steals" their prompts or their generated images. That they don't even see the hypocrisy is just... honestly it would be fascinating if it wasn't so infuriating. While they aren't creating anything other than a string of words to be used more like metadata than language, they do believe they are being "creative". So when someone else takes their "work" from them, they feel robbed. They feel violated when the time they put into their prompts (whether by taking from other prompts, googling artists' names, or downloading pictures to have the AI describe the picture back to them) is stolen and used without their permission. That a person using generative AI can turn around and in the same breath tell an artist they're overreacting about AI, is perhaps the best real life example of internet brainrot I can think of. It's so hard to pull AI users out of this echo chamber they're in now, because when you use these prompters and get "art" out of them, it's giving you a facsimile of the dopamine you get from real creation. Because that facsimile is functioning quickly and with ease, it's more akin to when psychologists make mobile games and social medias to be as addictive as possible. It's giving them small hits of brain activity to lock them in, without even realizing the pleasure they're deriving is not sustainable. They truly believe they are "artists", and more with every passing day, because of the "progress" they make with their prompts and the time they put into fiddling with the presets and models. The first thing like this that comes to my mind is akin to colonizing. When a nation is built on the blood of the people who already lived there. Eventually with enough time and generations, the children of the colonizers have no clue why their possessiveness over the land is so violently heartbreaking to the children of the displaced, even though all they did was be born there. (These are by no means the same in severity or thought process, my putting this here is not meant to convey that, even by implied association. Cruelty exists in multiple things; life is a mess of all of it.)
