I was driving on the I-40 in Arizona in the first half of 2021, when they were test-driving these driverless trucks and was almost run off the road in BROAD SUNNY DAYLIGHT. Thankfully, the man sitting in the passenger seat took manual control of the wheel, and prevented the driverless program from moving the truck from the right lane into the left where my car was about to pass. When my car became parallel with the truck's driver side window, I looked to my right and the driver looked right at me, and he had a look of COMPLETE AND TOTAL SHOCK like he didn't know from where I had come. This was a STICK STRAIGHT segment of I-40, and it could not have been more clear, bright, and sunny out. As far as I could see ahead of me, and in the rearview mirror behind me, there were *maybe* 5 cars on the interstate? The most frightening thing about this incident is that there was clear, bright, and sunny...a stunningly gorgeous day...and almost NO ONE on the road. It was March 2021, and CoVid vaccines had just rolled out to the public, and mostly for healthcare workers and people over 50. I cannot imagine what might have happened to me AND to that truck...and the man overseeing the operation in the passenger's seat. That said, as a native Texan who grew up in Dallas being driven...and driving...on I-45, I can tell you that there is far more dense traffic on I-45 than there was on ANY interstate during the pandemic in 2021, and especially driving through the Arizona desert.
