I’ve used AI to generate seamless textures to make into PBR materials, but I still have to go in and edit them because you can tell it’s AI with the base image it spits out. I have to manually edit spots or fix seams. However, they’re very creatively made, often coming up with a pattern I had never seen before. But it still lacks that human touch. Considering it’s in its early stages, it won’t be too long before it can generate perfectly done textures that stand out and mimic real life for free in a matter of seconds that many 3d artists charge big money for where it takes them hours or days to even create just one. It’s disheartening, really. I’ve worked in Blender and 3dsMax over the years for personal use, dabbled with ZBrush, and am now learning Substance Painter … and even though I am not a professional nor is it my job, just a mere side hobby, there is still a form of art there. I wonder how much longer it’ll be before AI can create models, texture them, and save them in a plethora of formats with all the right necessities needed …. if we’re too look at how fast things have changed just in the last year alone, it does seem very grim. I’ve seen people try and use the argument that “this is no different than when digital art became big”. Yes, I remember a time when digital art had pushback from the more traditional artists, claiming it wasn’t “fair” because they weren’t using materials IRL and were instead able to use dynamic brushes with colors and shapes to do most of the finer details. However, we slowly came to accept it and now consider digital artists just as much as one as artists of yesteryear. Many will point to that and say people will eventually cave and accept this new form of art all the same, but they’re not understanding that most people aren’t saying the stuff generated by an AI isn’t art. It very much is. It’s how it’s done that they’re not really getting — how it differs greatly from a human referencing other artwork and replicates a style with no restraints in terms of copyright. Something a human wouldn’t be able to do. I’m all for AI and look forward to seeing what we can accomplish with it, but going this route just isn’t it.
