Since I read Mustafa Suleyman's book The Coming Wave back in 2023 when ChatGPT was starting to ramp up, I haven't needed to change my opinion on our trajectory. When Deepseek R1 launched (which was in January 2025, the same year we're currently in, even though it feels like forever ago), my opinion on our trajectory was cemented. This is no longer a new technology that will help people solve problems, which we can slow down and make sure is safe along the way. This is a race with our biggest economic rival over who completes this generation's version of the industrial revolution first.
The Ottoman Empire rejected the printing press over concerns about the economic interests of scribes and calligraphers, and where are they now? China is hellbent on not repeating their "century of humiliation", so we know how they're playing this. The question is, are we racing toward a prize or a cliff?
