It should shock people that even left leaning media like Novara are so captured by current systems that they can’t even posit other systems where the public are benefited by these technologies rather than private enterprise, this technology is a common good it is not a huge leap to imagine that all public costs go to neutral e.g. only the costs of maintaining the hardware are relevant for public services.
When this started the whole conception was for it to be cost neutral with no profit motive, that disintegrated in a very short space of time and no one seems to be pulling back to that
Even in this video the assumptions being made are so paranoid and human, the LLM’s are text recognition engines built on an ever increasing number of if/else statements, they consume countries worth of energy and they are not even in the same league as our 2lb of pink flesh floating in salty water solutions. Yet hearing Eric Schmidt being mentioned and the scenarios for language models “talking” to each other like they are genuinely sentient is telling, these guys need to get outside and touch grass, everyone involved in AI needs to do that because they are all getting carried away
