We are able to sort of detect qualia (only very broadly and super imprecisely) as phenomena in the brain and body. Similarly, there are projects into making AI systems more transparent which would let us see a similar degree of "localized activity" so to speak, which would allow us to check claims of experiences made by AI systems. Also we should totally be funding AI safety research more.
