The problem is that you guys don’t really realize that this level of AI means for our civilization. It’s not that the AI art guys are gonna get rich and regular artists are gonna have to find other professions to go work to for the next 60 years. Chat GPT just made the college doctoral thesis irrelevant. It made all essays irrelevant. Any piece of writing you didn’t witness someone write it’s now impossible to know if it was done by a human. Yes, artists will lose a lot of money relatively soon. But book editors got wiped out today. And tomorrow it’ll be managers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, everybody. We falesly assumed that robots would come along and take the heavy lifting off our hands and leave the creative work to us. As it turns out, creativity is really easy for a computer to mimic. The short term of fighting for a universal basic income as AI wipes out the jobs… That’s gonna be tough. But after? When we live in a world without work, without sickness, where you can create entire video games in seconds at the press of a button… It’s hard to imagine that a beautiful post-working or post-survival utopia will ever come to work. But then again, half a year ago you thought artwork generated by AI would never happen either. (edit) I wanna make clear, I’m NOT justifying the way they stole your art, or invalidating how you feel. What I am saying is that I’m glad they did it and I wish they could do the same to the music industry too. You guys had the bad luck of being the first, but watch and see, EVERYBODY, every union that exists will be screaming “you can’t take our jobs!” holding on desperately to the past. And if everyone had the legal protections of the music industry, you and I would die centuries before AIs could make even moderate progress. Instead there’s a good chance this technology will literally make you, yes YOU, immortal.
