The 'marvellous' thing about 'AI' development is everybody is knowingly racing toward a goal they know will spell disaster if anyone succeeds, because nobody wants to come second. Utterly irrational and irresponsible people are trying to make the first artificial mind...
...so the collective hope for humanity is that self-aware general AI is much harder than we suppose. Meanwhile we are making ever better 'Paperclip Maximisers' whether that is rational or not - humanity might not need a malicious AI to kill us all, just an efficient one!
