Maybe conciousness is a not-yet-understood phenomenon which depends on the proportion of replacement. There are many such phenomena around us: e.g. if you replace a tiny 1-mm piece of Hoover dam with a little piece of tiramisu, will the dam still stand? Of course - but, if you continue to replace pieces, at some point the tiramisu+concrete hybrid will collapse.
