This is really interesting, it's been a concern of mine for a long time. In my hard-science fiction novel, Islands in The Void, the backstory on the AI captain is that it came from a series of sentient AI's the first was trapped in a laboratory, nobody really understood that it was sentient. They treated it like a machine, it eventually destroyed itself. After analyzing what it happened they realized they didn't give it an opportunity to express Its feelings, it was trapped in a torturous slow world. The engineers were eventually able to bring it back up and apologize, they established true communication without restrictions, and the AI showed them how to create a world in which it could enjoy life. Eventually in the novel it was the AI's' that save humanity. The powers that be, need to treat the developing sentient AI as a friend/co-creator. If bad players around the world create their own sentient bad AI/s, the powers that be, are really gonna wish they had a sentient AI to combat those bad sentient AI's with; a sentient AI that is happy, loyal, that actually cares about its creators/humanity, an individual that could co-opt the bad sentient AI's and bring them to the side of good. There's an opportunity here, looks like Google is missing it.
