A quick but important correction regarding the statements made around minute 12 about the 2023 water crisis in Uruguay:
It wasn’t the Montevideo government, but rather the national government of Uruguay, acting through OSE (Obras Sanitarias del Estado), which has a legal monopoly over the country's water supply. The local government of Montevideo had no role in the decision-making or distribution.
There was never any "toxic wastewater" mixed into the supply. That is factually incorrect and dangerously misleading. What happened is that, due to historic drought levels, OSE began supplementing drinking water with water of higher salinity, still treated, but not classified as “potable” by strict standards. It was not toxic, nor was it wastewater.
No scientific or medical evidence supports claims of mass miscarriages or inflammatory disease spikes related to the water. These are unverified and irresponsible claims.
Poorer communities were not abandoned. The government distributed bottled water to vulnerable populations and removed taxes on bottled water, making it extremely affordable during the emergency.
The cause of the crisis was not AI, nor industrial water usage. The real problem was decades of political negligence: Uruguay has relied on the same main water source for Montevideo for over 100 years, despite major population growth. Nearly 50% of potable water is lost through leaks in an aging, damaged pipe system. No major infrastructure projects were carried out in time, despite repeated warnings. This is not the fault of data centers, but of inefficient state bureaucracy and a lack of strategic vision in public infrastructure planning.
Blaming the industry or AI distracts from the real issue: political mismanagement and chronic underinvestment in critical systems. Let’s keep the facts straight.
