I did struggle with this question myself. I work in AI and build these systems, but I also see myself as an artist. When I was younger, I wanted to make a living from storytelling. I had vivid ideas, characters, and worlds in my mind, yet I lacked the drawing and narrative skills needed to express them. Over time, I focused instead on what I was strongest at: mathematics and coding. AI changed something important for me. It allows me to create things I could not create before and to tell stories in new ways. It is not perfect, but it can do “good enough” work in areas where I would struggle, allowing me to concentrate on the message I want to express. Even this text was written with the assistance of AI. Does that make it soulless? I do not think so. The intention, the ideas, and the meaning still come from me. English is not my native language, and I often struggle with grammar and prose, so AI helps bridge the gap between what I think and what I am able to write. Because of this, I believe AI-assisted art should not be dismissed as lower quality simply because AI tools were involved. What ultimately matters is not the method used to produce the work, but the intention behind it and the experience it creates for others. AI will likely one day generate stories that deeply resonate with people, perhaps even make us cry. Will it replace human art? No. Some meaning can only come from lived human experience, from the context and intention behind what an artist is trying to communicate about being human. At the same time, AI may also be able of new forms of expression that humans alone could not produce. The ethical questions, however, are real. The central issue is not whether AI “steals art,” but how the data created by all of us is collected, governed, and used by companies building these systems. That question affects far more than art alone, and it is one society should pay close attention to as these technologies continue to evolve. I don't think AI is fundamentially unethical, but big AI companies definitely did a lot of unethical things recently. Many of the tensions around AI art are therefore not purely technological, they are also economic structure questions. How value is captured and distributed will shape how society ultimately perceives AI creativity.
