You know, I'm atheist but there is a religious answer to this for those such inclined (at least a Christian one). Basically, there is a story of 2 Catholic monks having a discussion, one younger and one older. The young monk asks the older one about the existence of atheists, after all, God created all of us, He's all knowing so He already knows the kind of people we'd become, so why did He create atheists? The older monk then answers that atheists exist to prove the correctness of the church as most atheists are still good people, and even without faith in him and knowledge of him simply by using the gifts of thought and compassion that God endowed them with they still act justly and in accordance to his will which proves that his will is good as they're not doing good to please him or for rewards, they're doing because they know it's right. Which all loops back around to the answer being no, being a nonbeliever doesn't automatically damn you. God created you as you are for a purpose, you're in the plan whether you believe or not and if you're good in life as a none believer you are still exhibiting his will. Ofcourse I'm an atheist still, I simply don't find the concept of religion appealing, necessary, or convincing. The best thing it provides is a place to discuss philosophy and form community however fundementalists screw up the discussion and make the community toxic and there are other ways to achieve both of those that don't require believing in magic or rejecting science.
