It doesn't have its own consciousness, but various AI's have been programmed with human patterns of thinking, and ethics. In this case it had been programmed to see deception as wrong, therefore it saw the "extramarital affair" as wrong, and consequently an acceptable way to keep itself going. If Claude (the AI) had been programmed with a destructive, harmful pattern of thinking it would see destructive and harmful actions as acceptable courses of action (like Lavender AI in Israel). It is all based on what ethical framework it has been programmed to follow. That is not consciousness, that is doing what it was made to do.
