As a programmer who has done my own hobby work in machine learning and AI, the main reason this has not concerned me too much is because if AI "succeeds" in the way you're describing, a worldwide mob of 3-4 billion people will just hunt down and kill all the rich ones. Like, 4 billion people aren't just going to sit there and starve to death.
So yeah, that outcome is possible. For like a few months maybe. And then society collapses and the purge starts. And lots of those rich people know that.
