"I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream," a short story by American writer Harlan Ellison (Terminator copied and was sued), was written in 1967. The only difference is that these National AI programmes were used to fight each other, commanding all the destructive weaponry at hand. When they realised the issue was the humans, they merged into one entity, which named itself 'AM', and then wiped out all humanity except 5. This is where the story begins. Once you've finished and thought about it, there's only one possible ending. I won't ruin it; it's ironically available online as an 11-page PDF. And it's not what you think it goes into the psyche of the self. Also reminds me of Forbidden Planet (1956) and the ID.
I think the researchers have already read this short story.
