I strongly suspect that the way the future will play out is that good and bad ai actors will be developed. The good ai will help humanity guard, defend, and battle against the efforts of bad, malicious ai and our future will be governed by the ebb and flow of the balance between those two sides. It will develop into its own ecosystem much like computer viruses and virus protection software have developed in concert with each other. We'll likely be caught in the middle, running with the red queen.
