It is not illegal to cross mid-block in AZ. Yes, the pedestrian must yield the right of way to vehicles when not in a crosswalk, but failure to yield should result in a death sentence. We already have a caste system, with pedestrians and bicyclists at the bottom. Self-driving cars further this caste system. I for one, do not want to live in a world that worships cars to that extent. The idea of placing AV sensor "beacons" on pedestrians and bicyclists would be impractically funny, if it was not such a sad statement to suggest. Forget your beacon, or it fails, and the result is a death sentence? Big take away (besides Uber's tech failed miserably), is that law enforcement is completely unprepared to investigate and evaluate self-driving car crashes. Current laws on the books do not provide adequate guidance on whom is at fault. It is not so simple that the victim is at fault due to fail to yield. Drivers have a legal duty to be alert and avoid a crash. I expect Uber's attorneys will move heaven and earth to settle with the victim's family quickly and have them sign a non-dosicloure agreement - so they can bury the facts of this case. Self-driving cars are testing in AZ because of lax laws on public disclosure of test fails and crashes.
