Self driving can definitely solve a problem related to transportation but it isn't the one you have focused in the video.
The absolute best mode of transportation in a densely packed city is trains. Second to that is a bus.
Self driving however can solve the problem of connecting suburbs to one of these modes of transportation.
Imagine a large fleet of smaller minivans circling the suburbs. The path may be predefined or adaptible depending on the current number of outstanding users.
Then it becomes an optimization problem to get someone from point A to point B (maybe inside a city) with fewest number of transfers and least time.
Consider someone today wants to come up to Manhattan from south jersey. They have to either drive up here (which is expensive considering the tolls and parking and traffic on the road) or possibly take NJT which isn't convenient either as you have the 1-2 mile problem. It takes over 1hr at-least and even 1.5hr for a lot of these suburbs. Now if we had an uber like app to book the trip then it becomes a scheduling problem. You may have to wait 5-10 mins at your home. You get picked up by a minivan. You might have to transfer to a bus or another minivan which drops you off to the NJT station near Manhattan. You then take the final leg of the trip on the train. The problem becomes even easier if you are traveling between 2 points within the suburbs.
So why can't we do this today when we already have uber like apps. The reason is driver costs. It is hugely expensive to do this today.
One problem that is difficult to answer is the traffic on the roads. On one hand this service will remove a lot of cars from the road (Most cars today have a single person in it). A minivan of 8-10 seats can greatly relieve the pressure from the roads. But during transition periods you may see more traffic on the roads.
