Does it make sense that I’m pro-ai art in, but only in a vacuum? Even people who are born with a talent for art still have to put years into refining their technique. I’d love to say that the only thing you need to be good at art is passion, but for so many people these days passion is expensive. Free time is rare, and if you’re in a bad situation free time isn’t free, it’s the time you use to upgrade your marketable skills, or to turn off your brain. It’s just not an option for some people. Then you have the argument that it takes away jobs from artists, which creeps me out because it makes it feel like the value of art is purely economical. I just wish there was an ideal world where people could use ai to make art and say “hey I used ai to make this” and everyone would be like “that’s a cool concept that was in your head, I love that ai has given you the ability to express yourself”. But to live in that world we would have to solve the scrubbing problem, and global warming, and capitalism. I have sympathy for people who, for whatever reason, can’t put the time in to manifesting their ideas. Ai art has brought so much joy to their lives and it sucks that the ethical thing to take that away from them.
