Good documentary right up until the end, when Shoshana Zuboff's natural bias blinds her to the truth. I worked in the European Parliament in 2009/10, and already back then it was understood WITHIN the Parliament that the companies had a monopoly and that they were abusing it to undermine consumers' privacy. This documentary touches upon the truth a couple of times inadvertently, in the example of the Chinese regime, and also by mentioning that the company behind Pokemon was a CIA project. The truth is: this is not surveillance capitalism but surveillance corporatism - that is, private businesses and government working hand in glove to roll this stuff out. Zuboff says it herself: one day governments are going to want a piece of the action. Well yeah, they did right from the beginning. THAT's why the EU's values are a 50/50 combination of capitalism and socialism. THAT's why there haven't been any laws passed. Not because they don't know what's going on, but because the government is one of the primary customers of the companies who are harvesting al of this data. The companies have the governments' blessing to surveil us in this way - it means the governments themselves can claim not to be.
