All these AI bros and ChatGPT kids are gonna have a reeeeeally rough time when the AI bubble bursts, and they realize how many years of learning they've wasted on outsourcing their intelligence and creativity. And I feel especially bad for the gen alpha kids that are losing their formative years to the ease of convenience and comfort. When you're young, your brain is primed to learn the skills that'll carry you for the rest of your life. Once that window is over, it's much harder to learn new things. That's a special opportunity that you can't just get back easily. It would be like spending a year in a wheelchair, not because you need it, but because you just don't want to walk around. Well, guess what'll happen if you actually want to start walking again? Brain development is just like exercise, practice, and training... use it or lose it.
Yes, I know that every generation says stuff like this... hell, when pencils became popular, teachers complained that kids didn't know how to use a chalkboard anymore! But I feel like AI is being used to a degree that's so much more damaging than the technologies before it. It's like giving away your own education to a bank of servers somewhere -- glorified bundles of metal, sand, and lightning, at the end of the day -- that wouldn't care about the user even if they had the CAPACITY to do so. That's a dramatization, obviously; but seriously, who actually benefits from it? Whose existence is improved by the use of it?
To be clear, I think there actually *are* some pretty cool uses for AI. When it's used to do things that humans simply can't do, or to automate mind-numbingly repetitive tasks while we work on harder problems, then it CAN be useful for us. It's great for pre-screening medical tests, as long as it's used responsibly. (For example, it should never be used to rule something OUT, but it might rule something IN, like any other lab test. If an AI detects early signs of breast cancer, for example, then maybe that might justify a younger woman getting a mammogram or biopsy.) I've seen AI used in really fun ways, too, like using AI text-to-speech in the way that a musician would use a synth or Vocaloid to produce digital music. In that case, the user was working with (CONSENSUALLY-sourced) voice banks, which allowed them to use different voices (male, female, different specialties, etc.) for different purposes. Compare to a violin vs a guitar vs a cello. But instead of just throwing it into a text box and accepting what gets thrown out, the guy was "playing" the AI voices by hand, in the same way a composer would "play" a digital keyboard. See, that's *ACTUALLY* pretty dang cool.
