Here in Europe we have a more developed public transit system consisting of subways, commuter trains, trams and buses that conveniently take you almost everywhere in cities and suburbs 24/7. And Europe is generally safer than the US cities to travel around in since more people are out and about because of working public transport. We do have Uber and a European alternative called Bolt as well as regular taxis too. We do have a similar problem with assaults in taxis as you do, so even safer would be driverless taxis. They need to have parking though. But they do not need to be parked in areas where there are large parking today but in some industrial zone where they are out of the way of people with cheaper land. Sure. If, as you say, people predominantly prefer private self driving cars, the problem won’t go away as quickly. Teslas robotaxi idea of putting your personal car to use while you’re not using it to transport others, that might partially solve parking. But we will not be able to reduce parking until the fleets of autonomous taxis are big enough to handle peak demand with less private cars in use. Here the EU regulations also is an issue since they are much slower to adopt self driving tech. In the US it seems to be the rule that as long as it it not prohibited it’s allowed, as opposed to here where if it’s not regulated it’s generally NOT allowed. This slows the adoption down substantially. We maybe get a subset of what Tesla autonomous cars are allowed to do in the US here this fall. And that is only the highway parts. City driving is years away with this tempo. That said I like you have a paid off Tesla that has the FSD option but can’t fully take advantage of it. I pay about $260 per month for insurance parking and electricity. I live around 8 miles from the city center here in Stockholm Sweden 🇸🇪. I also used to drive for Uber part time for 6 years so I have some insight into that business too… The combination of public transport COMBINED with Uber like services or self driving taxis is where we can skip owning cars in cities anymore. Public transport to the majority of the commute, and taxis maybe the first and last parts of the journey to go fully door to door. So here Europe is ahead of the US and have the infrastructure in place to make this happen.
