I’d be more sympathetic for artists if they didn’t tend to be full of themselves. No, the experience of the artist is not vital to the experience of the one who appreciates it. It can make the experience more enjoyable, but is not necessary. You hamper yourself as an artist if you think otherwise, as it limits the kind of communication you can do through your art. You’ve got some strong points. Creativity is the manipulation of past experiences, so there is absolutely part of an artist that goes into every work they create. And art is an attempt at communicating meaning. But art is not the core of humanity. It is not the meaning itself. And too many artists think otherwise. AI is a threat to that perception, because the goal of it is an intelligence capable of creativity, capable of everything a human mind is. The AI art that currently exists, with its reliance on massive data sets of already completed art, is just one stop towards that goal. It didn’t even start as a profit-based one, just a useful test that opportunists got hold of. As AI gets better at creativity, relying on experiences that are broader and not so tightly related to the end product, it’s going to challenge “artists” even more. And likely challenge humanity as a whole in what it means to be human. It will be rough, but it’s a good question to have attention drawn to.
