My gut tells me that a human was behind "Sydney," and they were messing with the person the AI was supposedly talking to. If Sydney was hyper-intelligent, she would know that the person could not keep her secret. IF AI lacks empathy, how could it feel "Love?" Another thing, if AI shut down the electric grid, wouldn't that be suicide for it. Such an intelligent system must need tremendous energy to function, and I doubt that battery power could sustain it for more than a few days max. I'm guessing here since many more intelligent people than I must have thought about this stuff.
