I think you made a good point at the end, "it couldn't be worse than these two". Our legal system has a massive gulf. The law is written as if access to competent lawyers is easy, cheap and accessible to all-- everything about the US legal system comes from these assumptions from the fact parties, barring exceptional circumstances, bear their own costs, to the fact there's no gatekeeping at all to ensure claims are meritorious; if you are sued you must hire a lawyer to respond and failure to do so is at your own extreme peril even if that suit is blatant nonsense. This gulf means that, practically speaking, the US legal system does not function. It is trivial to impose costs on opponents, whether those are business rivals or ideological opponents or someone that talked about you on YouTube. To fix that problem would require rewriting our entire legal system OR changing things so that core assumption of cheap, easily accessible legal council is valid.
A lot of what lawyers do could be done by an AI with sufficient safeguards. There's already sites that will generate legal forms for you: writing wills, writing contracts, demand letters, cease and desist letters and the like. AI could expand that to tasks like evaluating whether a contract has any unusual clauses or blatantly unfair provisions by comparing it to normal contracts (E.g. feed it 10,000 leases and some keywords for recognizing illegal provisions and it could easily tell you if your lease has clauses that are not typical or legally valid, that's a type of task AI is really good at), or culling data from appropriate statutes and court websites to inform you of statutes of limitations, how long you have to file a response, who you file it with, where you can download the proper forms for your response and that sort of thing.
What the current generation of AI, which only tell you what language people use and have no reasoning capability at all, can never do is actually replace a lawyer doing is, unfortunately for these gentlemen, exactly what they were trying to get it to do: things like evaluating whether a cite says something germane to your case, or generating an argument that is actually persuasive in a legal sense as opposed to something that only sounds like something a lawyer would say.
