it's literally impossible for it to be sentient. The way that all AI works, even extremely advanced AI, is a system of algorithms that learn how to recognize patterns. For example, when you do those recaptcha things that say, "click on the school buses to prove that you aren't a robot," what you are actually doing there is *helping* AI to identify school buses through pattern recognition. So although it seems at first to be an extremely convincing case of sentience, this AI is merely *incredibly* capable at replicating human speech and thought patterns without itself being sentient. Now, if anyone else feels slightly concerned that Google has such powerful technology, you should be. Here is a fantastic comment from another person on this video: "The whole 'is it sentient' question is dumb, it’s most definitely not it’s just a vary complex chat bot... but people should be far more concerned about the fact that google has chat bots that could in theory pass as human." We are missing the forest for the trees when we debate its sentience, what we really should be debating are the ethics of such AI to begin with.
