Honestly the "The AI Chose murder" thing is dumb. If I remember correctly they slipped the possibility of the darker alternatives into the prompts when they were talking about shutting it down. Its obviously going to latch onto the bait you just dangled in front of it. Im pretty sure it was "smart" enough to read the room about what you wanted it to say if you're going to set up an extreme scenario and dangle the bread crumbs in its face. It knows you're fishing for shock value
