Whenever I encounter an AI "art" defender in the wild, I think of maybe the first interaction I had with one a few years ago, when the discussions about AI generated imagery were just starting to take off. it was a woman I met at a gaming bar who told me she was an "artist" and when I excitedly asked to see some of her "work," it was all AI generated rainbow-colored rabbits that she would then create pins of and sell. she really seemed convinced that she was "creating" these images herself, she said she was disabled (she seemed to use her hands just fine to me but who knows, maybe they cramped up easily) and I was too afraid of confrontation to push back at the time, but it really is sad how people like that have been lied to into thinking they're creating anything. the best metaphor I've seen someone say about it is that it's like going into a restaurant, ordering food, then saying you cooked the food yourself. it really is tragic to see people convince themselves that typing words into a dialog box so that a computer Frankenstein's together chunks of actual artists' work makes them themselves an artist. another comment I saw more recently was that "not everyone is good at everything" and that's okay." I and a lot of people will always have more respect for someone who picks up a pencil and paper and draws a stick figure than any single piece of AI generated imagery because at least the stick figure was created by an actual human.
