The "historical job creation" argument assumes everyone can just go ahead and casually skill-shift into whatever emerges and doing so completely ignores disability, neurodivergence, age, geographic location, economic barriers, and basic human skill diversity. It's the kind of privileged nonsense rhetoric someone would come up with who never really hit a wall without that wall being an actual immovable constraint. People aren't blank slates. Aptitudes and shortcomings exist. You can't just retrain someone to do something fundamentally different from their capabilities. My example: I'm a born-disabled wheelchair user with autism. My neurotype makes me less than useless at abstract conceptualization, but I am great at pattern recognition, iteration, language acquisition and use (I learned English as my third in a non-English environment), and all the other things LLMs do faster now. These are the things that were left to me with all my real, medically measurable and quantifiable cognitive and physical limitations that won't just disappear because the economy shifted. They are permanent hard limits, not just motivational challenges to push through. Might as well tell people "well, you could see infrared, if you just tried hard enough, your eyes are lazy". All the things I was physiologically/cognitively capable of performing have been either automated via LLMs, or integrated into larger roles as a subset and are no longer valid as independent occupations. So tell me Brendan, what's my new job supposed to be? Nobody cares, because even if I'm being generous with the number, there are maybe a 100 thousand people like me on the whole planet... I'll summarize the disconnect in the video in just five words: "Just let them eat cake."
