Artists should cop it sweet. If AI is ripping off your work, it means you did a good job, you're a good artist, assuming the use of your work isn't to take the piss out of it. If artists want to get paid properly, they need to push for sponsorship and sponsorship should come through public selection. Art history largely represents the tastes of the ruling class and it still does. So many other aspects of life are dictated in the same way and could be resolved in the same way. State sponsored art such as Soviet art is an affront to the ruling class, the idolisation of the worker makes them gag. But artists should understand, these soviet artists were like many of you, expressing their love for their communities. Sure, you could make art that pisses off the government and get in big trouble, but how much impact did such art create? OK, such art might've been expunged, but that wasn't the case where the soviets didn't have control. Critics of this view might cite Orwell - 1984 and Animal Farm, but these are critiques of authoritarianism. Animal Farm is depicted as a critique of authoritarian communism, but like 1984, it seems more like fascism with the demand for beliefs based on absurdity. Communists can have a propensity for such a demand, saying everything's fine when it's clearly not, but that applies to any form of government. A communist however, will never try and make you believe that some people are more equal than others, or some people are superior to others. That's fascism. The communist philosophy is devoted to dialectic discussion generally directed towards a resolution based on mutuality and productivity, the win win. It should also be understood that the movie Animal Farm was produced with the assistance of CIA funding and that some rebellions against monarchies could all have borne some semblance to that movie. The monied rebellion classes of feudal societies certainly weren't intending to share their unearned privilege obtained from the monarchies they overthrew, they just wanted to decide for themselves the terms of society. The UK House of Lords is a clear throwback of that era which hasn't really changed. Australia is sometimes referred to as a squatocracy, as it was settled largely by squatters. They were relieved of paying tax to the English monarchy and were able to keep what the monarchy deemed theirs. Given they then had control of the economy and the press, politics was determined by their whims and not 50 years after Federation, this class threw the nation into an enduring McCarthyite state of control. How can any party of labour be McCarthyite? None can, but by controlling the narrative, the lipstick is thus applied to the pig. So that still leaves the question of where the influential anti-communist art is? I don't think it exists now. Hollywood movies such as Red Dawn could have been considered such, but like other candidates, it's derivative by feeding of McCarthyite tropes which are still imposed as government policy. If one tries to base art off a fundamental deception, it's not going to resonate broadly into perpetuity. I digress. A successful society can provide a surplus of almost everything without requiring anywhere near the amount of effort demanded by the ruling class to keep them in the manner accustomed. Why do they care if you buy product A or product B when they own both producers? They know you have to buy one of them, that's why they chose to own the producers. But in their typical cynical way, they like to create the illusion of competition and have armies of people devote themselves to knocking off the competitor, to maintain an endless vacuum of human potential. Yay capitalism. As a trained industrial designer and attempter of other art forms, such as music, it's hard to be anything other than derivative. We were told to seek 'inspiration' form other artists we like, while developing our own style language. It's kind of arty, but without a resonating message or marks of distinction, it's not impactful and thus is considered as derivative. AI art is much the same, but it can be more. AI art just does part of what designers do much quicker. Designers digest the world of art and try to find a balance between the derivative and the innovative in their work. AI won't produce innovative art if the prompter isn't innovative. The Crypto and NFT bros aren't innovators and that's reflected in their content. They aren't succeeding in establishing themselves as respected artists. But AI is a medium and in the right hands, it can be innovative and influential to reflect of the human element.
