Neil's "useful and practical" argument completely ignores how AI is actually being used as a widely available, unregulated service. We live in an attention economy, so AI is being used in any way possible to gain people's attention on social media (AI ASMR, for example). Not to mention all the ways that we're exposed to AI against our will (take Google's "AI Overview" for example). It's also frustrating that the environmental implications of AI data centers weren't mentioned at all throughout the interview. All in all, this discussion lacks depth and doesn't address the true adverse effects of AI. Young people like me have serious concerns about AI's impact on environmental justice, job markets, and mental ability- and this discussion feels dismissive of that.
