Would Angel Engine ever have hired a real artist if the AI generated version wasn't as popular? I'd surmise that the answer would be no.
I think the discussion (though it often devolves into heated yelling and insults rather than true conversation at times) regarding AI and art is far too black and white. Most staunch Anti-Ai people are damn near absolutist who believe that there is no place whatsoever for AI but that's just not true. I give props to this vid for acknowledging some of the grays within this discussion.
I do believe that AI can never generate true good art on it's own. Simply putting a prompt like "generate a fantasy story" or "generate a superhero comic book", it will churn out something at it's best to be flat and generic, what many would call slop. Making AI be the source of the art will never work out. But unlike absolutist I believe that there might be place for AI as a tool provided there is a true artist and guiding hand behind it.
With the advancement of technology many tools have been made that shift what we think about art and it's mediums. The old will always be threatened by the technology of the new because it threatens to change the way they perceive the world as they know it.
I knew a professor of photography back in college who abhorred digital cameras because it felt like taking the humanity and artistry out of photography, because digital cameras had autonomized settings that used to have be manually adjusted (she forced everyone to buy a manual camera and instantly failed anyone who brought or used digital). I remember art professors who felt digital art wasn't true art because those who made art digitally had sacrificed learning "true skill" for expediency of pressing keys. Of course they were wrong, real artists have emerged utilizing these mediums to create genuine pieces of art. So too in the future will there be genuinely good art made in which AI was a major tool to complete the work.
True art will always have to come from a sentient mind with a vision and a will to complete that vision. AI will become a common tool for artists to utilize in their arsenal in the future and that is something we have to come to terms with. AI generation as a whole, no matter how much contempt and fear it currently inspires, will not go away. Pandora's box has been opened, and we have to eventually live with it. That doesn't mean we have to tolerate those who abuse it, or those who utilize it sloppily to make "content" and earn quick bucks (I applaud Youtube cracking down on channels producing fake AI movie trailers). But it does mean that we probably shouldn't tar and feather and burn artists at the stake who do make use of the tools at their disposal to help create their works.
