Totally get this with art, and including writing. It's neat and looks nice sometimes, but it's devoid of soul.
With the video game analogy, it's much more satisfying to see someone struggle through challenges, but it's also satisfying to see people program an AI to do simple tasks.
Training an AI to play Super Mario Brothers (1) is pretty cool. Similar to that, Tool Assisted (TAS) speed runs are fascinating, since you're writing a script to perform an optimal speed run, and that's pretty cool.
